Welcome

This is a website about the gruesome side of your local history. It’s what I call “Necro-History”. Every town, village and city has had multiple tales of murder, suicide, and accidents. I hope to feature and research these from the Victorian and Edwardian era.

Suicide’s that occur in well-known or religious buildings, murder in a theatre, ghost stories, tragic mining and train accidents, vicar running off with a barmaid, concealment of birth by servant’s, lynchings in the U.S.A. along with cannibals in the South Pacific. These are just some of the stories on the website, along with thousand’s more. It might look a bit amateurish, wonky and a bit cheap. There’s a good reason. I’ve got no money and I’m an amateur, with this being my first effort at a website.

Lincolnshire and London are the most popular; London was the largest city in the world: Lincolnshire because the papers are from this area and me too!  London is sorted into Borough’s and Lincolnshire into towns and villages due to their volume. (Featured heavily are Hull and Humber region in general.)     ** Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, Louth and Lincolnshire are under the Yorkshire and Humber section.**

Please remember with this website that the Victorians had a morbid fascination with death and some of the stories will churn your stomach. (Murder, Suicide, Infanticide, Cannibalism and Lynchings)

The rest is self-explanatory; Starting with England first; simply click on your home county and find unusual headlines from your area. Then comes Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Then European, USA, Canada etc.

Thank-you for visiting and I hope it gets you looking at your own local history via newspapers or in your local libraries but some can now be done online. Feel free to comment. Enjoy!
